ASTM E331 – Standard Test Method for Water Penetration of Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls by Uniform Static Air Pressure Difference

ASTM International E331-00 is a laboratory test method used to determine the water resistance of exterior windows, curtain walls, skylights, and doors under controlled conditions.

Overview of ASTM E331

ASTM E331 evaluates water penetration by applying:

  • Water spray to the exterior face and exposed edges of the specimen
  • A uniform static air pressure difference across the test assembly

This combination simulates wind-driven rain conditions to assess whether water penetrates beyond the interior plane of the specimen.

ASTM E331 Test Procedure

During ASTM E331 testing, water is applied to the exterior surface of the test specimen while a uniform static air pressure difference is maintained across the assembly. The test chamber setup may be configured from either the interior or exterior, depending on the laboratory equipment and configuration.

While chamber orientation may vary, equipment calibration requirements do not.

Laboratory Equipment Calibration Requirements

Calibration of laboratory equipment is mandatory under ASTM International requirements.

  • All test equipment must be properly calibrated and documented
  • Water spray racks must be recalibrated at intervals of no more than six months
  • Proper calibration ensures reliable, repeatable, and defensible test results
