ASTM & AAMA Continuing Education Program

ASTM E1105 and AAMA Field Testing Training

Sovell Investigative Testing and Consulting (SITC) provides advanced continuing education focused on the correct application of ASTM and AAMA field testing standards for water penetration and air infiltration of fenestration systems. This program is designed for architects, building envelope consultants, engineers, manufacturers, and testing professionals responsible for evaluating fenestration performance in both quality assurance and forensic investigation contexts.

Since 2006, SITC has delivered over 100 education courses to industry professionals. As ASTM, AAMA, and NAFS standards evolve over time, this new live virtual instruction program allows past and current participants to re-educate themselves on recent revisions, updates, and procedural changes.

This course is conducted via live virtual instruction (Microsoft Teams), allowing participants to select which standards they wish to review without the need to travel. The flexible format supports focused learning while minimizing disruption to professional schedules.

Course Description

This continuing education course provides a comprehensive review of the most current ASTM and AAMA water penetration and air infiltration testing standards, including ASTM E1105, ASTM E783, ASTM E331, ASTM E547, and applicable AAMA field testing protocols. The course also addresses relevant NAFS laboratory performance requirements and their relationship to field testing procedures.

Participants will gain practical knowledge related to testing setup, pressure selection, equipment calibration, execution, documentation, and reporting requirements. Emphasis is placed on understanding recent changes to standards, identifying common procedural errors, and ensuring testing results are accurate, repeatable, and defensible.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and interpret the intent, scope, and limitations of the most current ASTM and AAMA water penetration and air infiltration testing standards, including applicable NAFS laboratory standards.
  2. Apply correct testing procedures for current ASTM and AAMA field testing standards, including pressure selection, equipment setup, and calibration requirements.
  3. Evaluate fenestration performance based on NAFS performance grades, design pressures, and project specifications.
  4. Distinguish between quality assurance testing and forensic investigation methodologies and determine appropriate applications for each.
  5. Document and report test results in accordance with ASTM and AAMA requirements to support technically sound and defensible conclusions.
