ASTM E1105 Testing
Field Water Penetration Testing for Exterior Building Enclosures
ASTM E1105-15 — Standard Test Method for Field Determination of Water Penetration of Installed Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls by Uniform or Cyclic Static Air Pressure Difference — is the most widely used field test for evaluating water penetration performance of building envelope systems.
ASTM E1105 provides a reliable method for assessing installed fenestration and curtain wall systems under controlled water spray and air pressure conditions, helping verify performance after installation.
Why ASTM E1105 Is the Most Commonly Used Field Test
ASTM E1105 is the most popular field water penetration test because it is a combination standard. It incorporates the requirements of two widely recognized laboratory test methods into a single field-applied standard:
- ASTM E331 – Water Penetration of Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls by Uniform Static Air Pressure Difference
- ASTM E547 – Water Penetration of Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls by Cyclic Static Air Pressure Difference
By combining both uniform and cyclic pressure testing methods, ASTM E1105 allows field testing to align with how products were originally laboratory certified.
Benefits for Project Specifications
Specifiers frequently use ASTM E1105 because it provides flexibility across a wide range of projects. ASTM E1105 can be referenced in project specifications whether the installed products were certified using ASTM E331, ASTM E547, or both.
This flexibility allows ASTM E1105 to be specified for:
- Residential projects
- Light commercial buildings
- Commercial buildings
- Architectural performance class products
Procedure A vs. Procedure B
ASTM E1105 includes two testing procedures:
- Procedure A – Uniform static air pressure difference
- Procedure B – Cyclic static air pressure difference
The specifier should clearly identify which procedure is required based on the product’s certification and performance class to ensure proper evaluation.
